Valda Woodman J73VW of Dominica Amateur Radio Club told us of a cooperative project amongst certain islands in the Eastern Caribbean back in early June 2010. Now, members of Dominica Amateur Radio Club and project participants have provided some wonderful reports and pictures, which we want to share with you!
Thanks to Valda and Donald De Riggs (Op X Coordinator), Clem James J73CI, Sharmane Mark J73SHM and others for providing these...
FAIRS Helps: Floyd Community Garden is Looking Good!
A community garden has been established for use by individuals and organizations as a wholesome activity, and/or to produce healthy food items to share. The mission of the coordinators is to improve health and reduce hunger in Floyd County by increasing access to local, “good for you” foods, and to build community links. Special support is offered for first-time gardeners, and those with physical, mental or financial challenges.
On land which has been offered for $1/year lease by FAIRS, esteemed citizens are working toward 30 plots which are 10’ x 10’ each, available to participants by approved application and agreement. The Plenty! Group is overseeing the project (Karen Day and McCabe Coolidge are co-founders – more information at www.plentylocal.org). The community garden effort was initiated by Marcie Stout of Heavenly Mountain Acupuncture at Northside Plaza (½ mile north of stoplight in Floyd on Rt.8). HMA is located next to the garden.
Valda Woodman J73VW of Dominica Amateur Radio Club reported that a group of six members would be traveling for an amateur radio exercise...designed to test the readiness of emergency communications amongst islands in the Eastern Caribbean.
It is good that these islands are cooperating, and assisting one another during various times of need.
Valda said that they would go June 3rd, 2010 - 2 team members each to St. Lucia, to St. Vincent and to Grenada. They will work together with local operators to test equipment and procedures for use during disaster.
It is Valda's first opportunity, and she is expecting to learn much and contribute, too!
Valda and others from the Club are well capable of participating in and/or managing projects related to disaster, civic service, damage assessment and relief.
We will wish them good luck!

Amateur radio operators "Adopt-A-Highway" was initiated in 2006, and the effort has been continued by volunteers. We clean up a section of highway within the County for some additional "visibility" for ham radio and its goodwill efforts.
FAIRS helped out with the day (Sat. May 8, 2010), and several hams showed up for the highway clean up along a portion of Rt. 8 North in Floyd County.
Members of Floyd Amateur Radio Society are really mounting up for the summer season of special events and community service -
