Floyd Amateur Radio Society - "Adopt - A - Highway" Clean Up

Amateur radio operators "Adopt-A-Highway" was initiated in 2006,and the effort has been continued by volunteers.  We clean up a section of highway within the County for some additional "visibility" for ham radio and its goodwill efforts.

FAIRS helped out with the day (Sat. May 8, 2010), and several hams showed up for the annual highway clean up along a portion of Rt. 8 North in Floyd County.

It started with breakfast at Floyd's own Blue Ridge Restaurant, then FAR Society members, dressed in long pants, long sleeves, gloves, and hats made their way to Simmon's Store to be dispatched with bright orange trash bags.  Equipped with water, sunscreen, insect repellant and ht handy-talkies, the team did an expert job of tidying the area.

They worked in teams of two or three, with each team walking one mile facing the traffic.  Volunteers could call and be picked up when they requested it by use of ham radio.

A special thanks to all who participated in this clean up-- It went well and was completed in two hours. Don Johnson KF4HDW covered the event for the Floyd Press.  Thank you Don.

FAIRS, and especially Mama Sallie (Martin) provided brunch following the clean up.  Her special ham biscuits, baby quiche and banana nut bread were to die for. Very satisfying after a morning of hard work.

Come join us for our next monthly meeting of Floyd Amateur Radio Society:  Saturday, June 12th beginning with breakfast at 8am (Blue Ridge Restaurant, across from the Courthouse in Floyd), then gathering at Floyd Professional Center (Suites 8 & 9 at the Village Green - home of Floyd Community Amateur Radio Station) to follow.
