... delivered portable radios to Dominica
February 3, 2007 - February 13, 2007.
FAIRS (Foundation for Amateur Intl. Radio Service,
Ltd.) presented 24 portable radios and chargers to Dominican police.
The police radios were accepted by Commissioner Matthias D. Lestrade,
and he mentioned how they were “much needed”, and had come at an
opportune time! These radios reportedly doubled their current
working supply.
The primary purpose of the trip to Dominica was to enhance emergency
communications on the island: to make the presentation of 24 portable radios
(and chargers) for use by Dominican police **Thanks to Henry Henderson of
ProComm Communications in Blacksburg, VA, for his help in securing these
units**; to assist a committee in the east to prepare for emergencies
common to their region; to increase the ability of Dominica’s current
amateur radio operators to perform functions of service. Also, the group
would distribute donated items gathered over the last six months:
communications equipment, supplies and medicines, which were inventoried and
transported by the team in 10 suitcases, 50 lbs each. A ham radio friend,
also a member of FAIRS, had just taken a shipment some weeks ago…so there
was follow-up to be done regarding the handling, disbursement.
